Hospice House Ultimate Memorial Ride 2017
Riders from all over the Pacific Northwest and as far as Ontario, Canada took on the HHUMR’s scenic tour of the Willamette National Forest while raising funds for the Pete Moore Hospice House. From creek-side back roads to exhilarating summits, these riders conquered everything this 168 mile course could throw their way.
This year a late storm covered the McKenzie Pass and Hwy 242 in a blanket of snow. It was cleared by snow plows Thursday evening before our Friday morning start. The crew bussed to Sisters, Oregon and embarked on the 38 miles segment that runs from just outside Sisters to Bellknap Springs. Since 242 was still closed to motor traffic, our crew took full advantage of the freshly cleared road as a traffic-free bikeway. Ascending through the ponderosa pine forest, riders experienced stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
The faithful, cheery support crew had snacks, lunch, and some words of encouragement at least every 25 miles to help our HHUMR riders refuel for the next leg. By the time the whole crew reached the campsite near Cougar Reservoir, everyone was ready for a hot shower, hearty dinner and the Ninkasi sponsored beverages. We capped off the night with a campfire, brownies and a competitive round of cards.
After a protein packed breakfast the next morning, riders took off along Aufderheide Memorial Drive which runs along the lush South Fork of the McKenzie River. This stretch is affectionately called the “Magic Carpet Ride” by the locals because of its smooth pavement and winding path. Its summit near Box Canyon gave riders a worthy challenge, but all finished the day in high spirits. Waiting at the end of day 2 was a special treat: a team of massage therapists!
Day 3 was definitely the most challenging as riders climbed up and over the Calapooya Mountains south of Oakridge. This part of the ride was a test of fortitude, but all our HHUMR riders handled it like pros. By the end of the ride, the smooth and flat Row River Trail was a welcome finale. Families, babies, puppies and friends gathered for a BBQ at the finish line at Moseby Creek Trailhead to celebrate.
This incredible group of riders and support team raised more than $5000 dollars for the Pete Moore Hospice House. With that sense of accomplishment, new memories and new friends, we all can’t wait for next year!
