Living Well at Any Age

Tips for thriving during Healthy Aging Month and beyond

Healthy aging is not just about adding years to life, but life to years - embracing habits that enhance physical health, mental well-being and overall quality of life. Whether it's eating a balanced diet, staying active or nurturing social connections, small changes can make a big impact. If you’re one of nearly 60 million Americans are age 65 or older, Healthy Aging Month is about you and your life – and how to live it well.

  1. Add some variety to your exercise routine. Activities like yoga or tai chi can improve your balance to help prevent falls and maintain your flexibility, which keeps you limber and protects against injuries. Aerobic activity at any age is good for your heart, while strength training keeps your muscles and bones strong.

  2. A well-balanced diet incorporating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is always important – but it’s even more vital as you age. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries and nuts, can help combat inflammation. And research shows that eating five servings of fruits and veggies per day may lower your risk for some chronic diseases.

  3. Regular check-ups and screenings are critical for catching potential health issues early. Keep up with recommended screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, as well as mammograms or colonoscopies. Vaccinations are also important; flu shots and other immunizations help protect against illnesses that can be harder to bounce back from as you age.

  4. Keep your mind young by trying new things, engaging in activities that bring joy, and maintaining social connections. Stay connected with friends and family, and don’t hesitate to seek out new social opportunities, whether it’s through community groups, volunteering or social clubs. Activities that take your brain down new paths, like learning to play that instrument you never had the time to pick up or trying a new workout class, keep you mentally on your toes.

If “you’re only as old as you feel,” resolve to keep your mind and body feeling as healthy as possible!
