How Counseling Can Improve Your Quality of Life

We all experience difficult situations, feelings, relationships and thoughts. An important part of moving forward and continuing to grow despite these difficulties is learning healthy habits and coping skills.

Cascade Health Counseling can help you examine the factors contributing to your difficulties, identify what you have the power to improve and develop a plan to make the changes you want to see. For instance, we can help you:

✅ Identify negative thinking patterns or self-talk that make you feel bad and learn ways to interrupt and redirect your thoughts.

✅ Look at habits that aren’t serving you well and make healthy changes.

✅ Learn to accept yourself and recognize your strengths to improve your self-confidence.

✅ Improve your communication skills.

✅ Manage stress in healthy ways and become more mindful.

✅ Improve problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.

✅ Deepen your relationships.

✅ Address a specific concern or condition such as depression, anxiety, addiction or anger management.

When to Consider Counseling

There are countless reasons you may wish to see a counselor or coach. Some are obvious, like getting help when you’re depressed or have lost someone you love. But you may also wish to enlist the help of a counselor when you just haven’t felt like yourself for a while. It can be helpful to have someone listen without judgment and help you come up with a plan, no matter what’s bothering you.

While there’s no right or wrong reason to see a counselor, here are a few examples that may help you decide if it’s the right time for you:

  • You are dealing with significant life events such as moving, marriage, becoming a parent or experiencing a loss.

  • You experienced a trauma and would like help processing it in healthy ways.

  • You have an illness or injury with which you’re having a difficult time coming to terms.

  • You are feeling anxious or are having intrusive thoughts.

  • You have lost interest in things that you used to enjoy or feel yourself withdrawing from other people.

  • You are having a difficult time regulating your emotions, such as anger, resentment or sadness and find yourself lashing out at others or crying uncontrollably.

  • You feel fatigued, even though you may be sleeping more than usual.

  • You feel stressed or overwhelmed.

  • You feel hopeless or unmotivated.

  • You are coping with uncomfortable emotions or situations in unhealthy ways, such as drinking or self-medicating.

  • You want to improve your relationships.

  • You want to overcome obstacles like perfectionism or lack of motivation to reach your goals.

  • You don’t feel as happy or satisfied as you think you should — or could — be.

FACT: Counseling helps you learn how to deal with parts of life that aren’t easy in healthy ways. Wanting to improve your life and grow doesn’t mean you’re crazy or weak — it means you have the strength and maturity to recognize that you want better for yourself.

Misconceptions About Counseling

People who go to counseling are crazy or weak.

Everyone will know I’m seeing a counselor and think there’s something wrong with me.

FACT: Like medical care, counseling is completely confidential, and your information will not be shared with anyone unless you authorize it. If you access counseling through your company’s EAP program, your information will not be shared with your employer — they will not even know you saw us.

My problems are really embarrassing, and I don’t think I can share them with anyone.

FACT: Our counselors have years of education, training and experience working with people from all walks of life with all manner of problems. Counseling is a safe space and your counselor will not judge you. We are here to validate and help guide you through difficult feelings.

I just want to work on one situation, but counselors always pry into things I don’t want to talk about.

FACT: Your counselor will not pressure you to talk about anything you don’t want to. If you are ever uncomfortable with your counselor’s questions or feel overwhelmed, you can ask them to stop, and they will listen. It is up to you how much you want to share. When you are ready, your therapist is there to listen without judgment.

My problems aren’t that big of a deal. I should just deal with it myself.

FACT: No matter how big or small your concerns, they’re yours and they’re valid. Our counselors will listen non-judgmentally and help you work through whatever is bothering you.
